Did you know?...

On May 24, 1976 at 3pm Paris time, nine of the top wine judges of the world, all French wine experts, shocked themselves and the world in an event that has gone down in history as the Judgment of Paris.

On that fateful day, in a blind tasting, they awarded a budding and underestimated Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and a Napa Valley Chardonnay top place over the best Cabernets and Chardonnays from France.

The only member of the press to report this stunning upset to the world was George Taber, who went on to become the critically-acclaimed author of the 2005 release, Judgment of Paris.

This not only opened the door of the wine world to Napa Valley, but touched off a revolution that spread from Chile to Australia, from New Zealand to South Africa, and continues to this very day.

What’s news is in 1976 in Southern New Jersey, Amalthea Cellars Winery planted its first Chardonnays and Cabernets in the soils of what’s now known as the American Viticulture area…the Outer Coastal Plain.

For fun and the love of wine, would you like to see if the 1976 revolution also spread to South Jersey?

On October 11, 2007 Amalthea Cellars Winery will host the launch of George Taber’s newest release, To Cork or Not to Cork: Tradition, Romance, Science, and the Battle for the Wine Bottle. To honor this book launch, we plan to now take Amalthea Cellars wines and have them tasted along with the original French and Napa Valley wines that took top honors in the 1976 Judgment of Paris.

Location: Amalthea Cellars Farm Winery, 209 Vineyard Road, Atco, NJ 08004
