The Seafarer
Tuesday Nov 18th - Sunday Dec 14, 2008
No Monday Performances

The Seafarer by Conor McPherson/Directed by Anders Cato

A funny and haunting alternative to traditional holiday fare.

It's going to be a devil of a Christmas in Baldoyle, a coastal settlement just north of Dublin City. The fog is dense and a group of friends have gathered for what seems to be a simple game of poker, until a mysterious stranger joins the game and raises the stakes damningly high. Named "The Best New Play of the Year" by the Wall Street Journal, "The Seafarer" is an unforgettable Irish tale of old friends and holiday spirits - where the whiskey bottle is hidden under the couch and everyone lays their cards on the table.

Anders Cato, who directed last season's critically acclaimed production of "Doubt" will return to helm this Olivier Award-winning and Tony-nominated best play.

Special Book Club Package - $50 per person

Includes copy of the book, study guide and a ticket to The Seafarer. To order the book club package or to arrange for a George Street Playhouse staff member to speak about The Seafarer at your book club meeting, contact Michelle Bergamo at 732-846-2895 x134 / This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Sight Unseen
by Donald Margulies/Directed by David Saint
Tuesday Jan 20 - Sunday Feb 15, 2009
No Monday Performances

Jonathan - a rock-star of the modern art world - wrestles with an unexpected identity crisis after a German critic questions his motives as a Jewish artist.  While on business in London he visits Patricia, the now married ex-lover who was the subject of his first great painting, ten years prior. Does she still possess the fire he needs to re-ignite what once existed in his painting?  Or is he more interested in possessing the nude that hangs over the fireplace in her home.

Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies' OBIE Award-winning play dabbles in the controversial themes of race, religion, and belonging, in a play highlighted with humor and brilliant dialogue.

The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith
by Angelo Para
Tuesday March 3 - Sunday March 29, 2009
No Monday Performances

It is the eve of her tragic death in 1937 and Bessie Smith is the most successful entertainer of her time.  She has just walked out of a whites-only theater in Memphis, where she was to perform, because they wouldn't let her through the front door.  She goes instead to a "buffet lat;" an unsavory den of music, gambling, food and sex, where she proceeds to regale the audience with the amazing story of her life and career, including powerful renditions of "T'aint Nobody's Business If I Do","St. Louis Woman", "Down Hearted Blues" and others.

New Year's Eve
by Arthur Laurents / Directed by David Saint
Tuesday April 14 - Sunday May 10, 2009
No Monday Performances

What does a smart, funny star do when everything is turning into a bad joke on her?  George Street Playhouse Artistic Director David Saint directs the world premiere of this sophisticated new comedy by Tony Award-winning playwright Arthur Laurents.

Mr. Laurents, who is currently represented on Broadway with the Tony Award-winning revival of "Gypsy" and next season's "West Side Story", is also known for penning the screenplay for "The Way We Were" and Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope".

Audience favorite Marlo Thomas, who appeared in George Street's hit comedy "Roger Is Dead" last spring, will play Isabel.
