Weekend Picks: Almost Spring! PDF Print E-mail
Weekend Picks
Thursday, 08 March 2007

They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. What's in the middle? We say: Lots of stuff.

Like:

Tapping

Vermonters know that the classic time to tap maple syrup is now. New Jerseyans can follow their advice Sunday, 2 p.m., at the Tenafly Nature Center (www.tenaflynaturecenter.org). Learn about the history of maple syrup, then boil down sap to make a fresh batch. Members free, $5 non-members.

Running

Join the Morristown St. Paddy's Day 5-K, beginning Saturday morning at 10 a.m., at Ginty Field in Morris Township. Or, start your beach season early with the Sixth Annual Keith McHeffey 3-Mile Fun Run at Donovan's Reef, Sea Bright. It's an 11 a.m. start Sunday. On-line registration for both is at www.raceforum.com.

Parading

Get down the Shore the day before the McHeffey race, to Seaside Heights for the Ocean County St. Patrick's Day Parade, starting at noon (and a week early). Call (732) 830-1847. For a list of St. Pat's parades in New Jersey, go to www.saintpatricksdayparade.com.

Planting

Or at least planning your garden, at the Springfest Flower & Garden Show. Floral beds, landscaping displays, gardening workshops, more than 50 vendors. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. all weekend at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta. Call (973) 948-9448 or visit www.springfestgardenshow.org.

Peeping

One of the first signs of spring is the loud chorus of Spring Peeper frogs as they emerge from hibernation and get ready to breed. Take a walk along wooded ponds to hear and (maybe) see, with a guide from the New Jersey Audubon Society, 10:30-noon, at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland. Call (973) 268-3500 ext. 270 or go to www.njaudubon.org.

Rockin'

The guitar player's guitar player, rock-jazz fusion demigod Allan Holdsworth, (www.therealallanholdsworth.com) is in concert with his trio at the School of Rock (www.schoolofrockeast.com ) in South Hackensack, Sunday at 8 p.m. $25 a ticket, call (201) 342-8314.

Shoppin'

For your guy's spring wardrobe… tie one on at the Vineyard Vines (www.vineyardvines.com) trunk show Sunday afternoon at Nordstrom (www.nordstrom.com ) in Short Hills Mall . Treat him to one of their signature silk ties—pick up a free gift, sail off to your shore house in style!

Zap Those Wrinkles! PDF Print E-mail
Beauty
Wednesday, 07 March 2007

Here's an interesting wrinkle fix that doesn't involve plastic surgery or lasers, or little needles under your skin. It's a zap of electricity that stimulates your skin like acupuncture.

Jonathan Holasek, Mountain Lakes acupuncturist and practitioner of holistic health (973-331-0200), aims his wattage at your face and in seven sessions you may see a new you. Fewer lines, and for those of us who are sleep deprived (who isn't?) less baggage and circles under the eyes.

First, you lie on a waterbed in a spa-like room, restful music in the background. Jonathan tests your muscle strength using a colored light. Which color do your muscles react favorably to, red or blue? He adjusts your electrical current accordingly. He calls it Holistic Facial Rejuvenation. You can read more at (www.vibrationalbeauty.com).

After a hot towel and some skin-enhancing nutriceuticals are applied, your face is ready to be zapped. Jonathan holds two pulsing wands and traces the outline of your eyes, mouth, the furrows on your forehead. You feel nothing except the tiniest tingle.

Circulation stimulated, muscles tightened. Blotches banished. The process has also been used to treat Bell's Palsy, a neurological disorder characterized by sharply sagging facial muscles.

It takes six or seven sessions at Jonathan's office to find the younger you. The cost is $225 a 90-minute session, or $175 for an hour.

You may want to try it before you go under the knife or the needle. It's also a nice place to take a nap, after a long day.

The Scarlet Knights' season reminded us that it is good to be from Jersey. In the spirit of our home state, we offer you some retail cheerleaders…

Do you love wearing the Rutgers logo? We do. Check out the collection of women's tee shirts (cap sleeve, spandex, pink, grey and red) at the University Bookstore in downtown New Brunswick. The website www.collegefootballstore.com has some, but not all of the shirts. It might be worth a drive to the banks of the Old Rar-i-tan.

www.jerseygood.com is beating the drum with funny tee shirts about our produce, our diners, and our jughandle exits. The state-deprecating clothing ("New Jersey—at least it's not Staten Island") will immediately elevate your status from Turnpike transient to Garden State insider. You can use the code "DES148" to get $10 off orders of $50 or more.

www.jerseypride.com sells clothing with the LOGS (Lovers Of The Garden State) logo. There's a laundry list of everyone famous who was ever from New Jersey, or lived here for a period of time. Check out the pictures of tattoos in the shape of the state map.

After you outfit yourself, head to the website for the New Jersey Hall of Fame (www.njhalloffame.com) and cast your ballot for the inductees. The Hall of Fame backers are determined to build a museum, change perceptions, and educate us on our history. Besides, these folks promise a blast of an induction ceremony—televised, with first class entertainment.

Congratulations, you are officially a Jersey Girl. Now about that tattoo…

Hot CoCo to Go PDF Print E-mail

Monday, 05 March 2007

Should you let someone from one of the state's hottest clothing shops re-organize your closet?

If your wardrobe is in pain, but your bank account is healthy, consider CoCo-to-Go, the new roadshow from the CoCo Pari Boutique (www.cocopari.com).

Sara Beth, the Red Bank boutique's traveling consultant, arrives at your home and eyeballs your closet. Assuming she believes the patient is worth saving, she will return with armloads of goodies for you to peruse.

She brings Valentino to Moschino, Louboutin to Laurent. It all depends on you—your look, and your needs.

As a special incentive to NJ My Way subscribers… the store will reduce its requirement of a $1,000 retainer to $500. That's the amount you need to put down to set up your first visit. The money—all of it—goes towards your new wardrobe. We know you will find something to buy!

Coco Pari's Red Bank flagship (there is also a smaller store in Deal) is 10,000 square feet, and three stories of every designer label you can name. Even some you won't find in Neiman Marcus. Open late (11 p.m.) on Fridays and Saturdays, it attracts some of the town's trendy club hoppers.

If you order CoCo-to-Go, you'll get the individual services of Sara the stylist. A designer wardrobe that fits your image. It's all sans the trip down the Parkway to this cabaret of couture.

Sara won't discuss individual clients, she says it's all hush hush confidential. But she told us business is booming. Call her at (732) 212-8111 and don't forget to mention NJ My Way, so you get the discount. Join this club, and you may never go near a mall again!

By the way, we apologize to our friends at the Salt Creek Grille in Rumson, for mistakenly referring to them as the Salt City Grille, in last Wednesday's Rooms With A View. Help make it up to them, by reserving your table there soon!

Call My Lawyer! PDF Print E-mail
Art & Culture
Friday, 02 March 2007

At 300 plus bucks an hour, legal advice isn’t cheap. So from time to time, in the spirit of giving you stuff for free… we throw in some pro bono legal briefs.

We turn to Kinnelon’s own Gary Chester, author of See You in Court, A Trial Attorney’s Look at Crazy Cases, Ludicrous Lawyering, and Dubious Decisions (www.amazon.com).

First, Gary says,  driving while using your cellphone isn’t just dangerous. You can be ticketed if you are stopped for another infraction, and it turns out you were on your phone as well. But also your phone records don’t lie.

A New Jersey driver who was injured in a car accident lost her lawsuit because her cellphone records showed she might have been chatting at the time … and actually caused the crash.

And, score one for divorced moms!  Gary says when a dad tried to back out of paying college tuition because he wasn’t consulted about his daughter’s college pick… the judge backed up mom.  It’s something to consider when you hash out a child support agreement.

Finally, if you head down to Ocean City this summer,  it would be smart not to feed the  seagulls.  And cheaper. The town will  slap a $500 fine on anyone who feeds the scavengers.  That should keep bird mess at a minimum.

The real news, … it’s safe to wear your white shorts to sit on those boardwalk benches again.

Check out Gary’s book, and feel free to write him at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with questions or suggestions.
