This being April, the annual prom dress hunt has begun in earnest. Thousands of teens (reluctantly toting their moms and, more importantly, mom’s plastic) are prowling department stores, formal wear retailers, and pricey boutiques.
That’s what brought us toVera Donna in the Livingston Town Center (www.livingstontowncenter.com), an exclusive boutique of European and American designers that caters to mom, and prom, couture.
Admittedly, not for everyone. Prices are up there ($700 plus for some gowns). But the collection by designer Sherri Hill (www.sherrihill.com/dresses/prom-dresses.php) will get your kid voted Prom Queen.
Our NJ My Way Fashion Editor, Maria Cucciniello of The Hip Event (www.thehipevent.com), pulled out some of the best to show us.
Our favorite dress: a hot pink bodice with a black and white polka dot halter. “Very very Audrey,” the designer’s website exclaims. But there are plenty of other gowns — bold prints, textured fabric, detail like beadwork, metallic trim — to make your daughter’s prom a night to remember.
There are also stunning short dresses for prom or cocktails. Long or short? Your prom dress can be either this year, according to Maria: “The rule is, there are no rules,” she says. The right dress will look beautiful on, and help you make the perfect fashion statement.
Happy hunting! |

On Valentine’s Day, show your better half that you really care, with a great gift from some of the state’s finest establishments. Or maybe just treat yourself.
And because you are an NJ My Way subscriber, you’ll save 10 percent on your purchase. Just bring a copy of today’s column with you to these folks, and enjoy the instant reward of belonging to our growing Internet community.
If you’ve been thinking about investment-quality jewelry, look no further than Yanina & Company (www.yanina-co.com) in Cedar Grove. This exclusive jeweler sells originally designed and styled bling that will make anyone feel special.
How about a bubble bath for two? Soapmarket (www.soapmarketonline.com) in Red Bank is awash in natural products that will make you feel like spending hours together underwater.
Two spas are joining in our ten-percent-off fun. Apogee Spa and Concierge Service (www.apogeespanj.com) in Berkeley Heights is offering the Sweetheart Duet Massage; the $250 treatment for two includes a footsoak in chocolate mint, or chocolate cherry, and rubdown with (what else?) chocolate massage oil.
Ditto for Radiance Spa in Hackensack (www.radiancenj.com) where besides massage, treatments include lip plumping, botox, and cellulite removal.
After all that pampering, finish off with a fabulous blow out, and complimentary $35 Kerastase conditioning at trendy Lounge Hair Studio (www.theloungehairstudio.com) in Denville.
Looking for a great outfit to match that sexy hair?
Gotham City Clothing (www.gothamcityclothing.com) in Millburn rocks teens and “it” moms with a bounty of just right designer clothing. Things are more laid back at the Lotus Boutique (www.shoplotus.com) in Boonton, but there are plenty of great styles on every rack in this relaxing little shop.
Guys, she’ll love everything you pick for her at Bare Necessities (www.barenecessities.com). Our friends at the Matawan store will make sure you pick the sexiest lingerie from the finest designers, to complete your fantasy.
Finally, we know you want to spend the night someplace really luxurious and special. We recommend splurging on the Romantic Interlude Package at the historic Bernard’s Inn (www.bernardsinn.com). It includes dinner for two, a night in one of their amazing rooms, complimentary champagne and roses, and breakfast the following morning. The package, good on Thursday and Friday, begins at $575.00 not including the NJ My Way discount.
Wherever you go, don’t forget to ask for your 10 percent off! Just tell ‘em we sent you. And feel the love! |

My Flat In London handbags are not for all women. They are for women who want to feel like girly-girls. Or even Jersey girly-girls.
Despite the name, these celeb-blessed designer handbags are headquartered on this side of the pond, in Lawrenceville. They are the proud product of a local husband-wife team, Todd and Jan Haedrich (she designs, he runs the business side), who find New Jersey scenically satisfying and convenient to the New York City fashion world.
MFIL (www.myflatinlondon.com) bags have been around for eight years and stayed true to the core design, an “evergreen, jet set flavor,” says Jan. Her favorite images — crowns, terriers, bees — adorn the side of the handbags. She’s designed accessories like tee shirts and jewelry with matching icons. The shirts even have “secret messages” about the images.
In Jan’s real flat in London, the transplanted American briefly escaped the masses by taking luxurious bubble baths and sipping champagne. She designed the handbags, made of fine Italian leather, to capture the essence of her hideaway: pink and silky, adorned by bows.
Now the Haedrichs travel the world, promoting the luxury brand and its staying power. MFIL will be around for “generations to come” says Jan. You’ll pay a little extra for the label. But like all your designer goodies, they make you feel special. And Jersey girly girl — you are worth it! |

You might not think of hitting the Jersey Shore in the dead of January, but this might be exactly the right time to spend a day in your favorite resort.
Case in point: the picturesque town of Spring Lake (www.springlake.org). On a recent visit (click www.njmyway.com for video), just a few lonely ducks navigated the spring-fed waterway at the heart of town. Many of the turn-of-the-century homes were empty. But without crowds there was plenty of parking, and stores and restaurateurs were eager to please.
Leave time to traverse Third Avenue and its side streets. Stop in and see Mary Reilly at the Irish Centre (www.irishcentre.net). The store is loaded with fine china and unique pottery. Plus a huge collection of crystal. This shop is one of the crown jewels of this so-called Irish Riviera.
Across the street, newcomer Finishing Touches (1115 Third Avenue, 732-449-8686) is plump with hand-embroidered pillows from Catstudio (www.catstudio.com) that salute our favorite state — and some others. A fabulous Jersey pillow illustrating everything from Cape May to Hoboken retails for $136. Shop owner Maureen Skea will give an additional 10 percent off any Catstudio pillows to anyone who brings her a print-out of this NJ My Way column.
Right next door, browse Urban Details ( www.urban-details.com) for more house gifts and wearable art. An early Valentines Day gift? How about the handmade, hand-painted photobox frames from Sugarboo Designs (www.sugarboodesigns.com)?
Hit Skuby & Co. (www.skubyandco.com) for the best casual Friday (or any day!) clothes for your other half. And shop the cousin Skuby Blue (www.skubyblue.com) for hot jeans for both of you. Pamper yourself afterwards at Juli Mei (www.shopjulimei.com).
Save room for lunch or dinner at the Island Palm Grill (www.islandpalmgrill.com), an oasis of fresh seafood with Gulf Coast and Latin flavors. Or savor the extra light omelets at Who’s On Third Deli/Grill (1300 Third Avenue, 732-449-4233), a family-welcoming eatery that challenges your knowledge of baseball trivia and the Jersey-born duo Abbott & Costello (www.abbottandcostello.net).
Spring Lake is daunting in winter when the wind whips back from the ocean. But sometimes the Shore on a January day is a great warm up for July. |

Travel is stressful. This time of year, especially so. But if you’re grounded at Newark Liberty International Airport you’ll find plenty of ways to kill a few hours — and, shockingly, you might actually enjoy your terminal time.
Start by booking ahead the Long Haul Reviver for your feet at the Departure Spa (www.departurespa.com), in terminals B and C. This place knows that travelers need to be nurtured, from a quick haircut, to a manicure, to a full body massage. We’ve tried the hair services before a short haul flight and landed looking fresh from the salon.
Shopaholics can have fun killing time, specially in Terminal C. Brave the security lines early so you can browse places like Ron Jon, the northernmost branch of LBI’s famous surf palace (www.ronjons.com), and putter around in the USGA Open Golf House (www.hudsongroupusa.com/USGA_a.html).
Frame your face with designer shades at Occhiali Da Sole (www.occhialedasole.com), and drape your body with designers like Kenneth Cole (www.kennethcole.com) and Lacoste (www.lacoste.com). There’s travel bling at Landau (www.landaujewelry.com) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art store (www.metmuseum.org/store/index.asp).
Still in Terminal C, wind down with the popular bacon cheeseburger at the Garden State Diner; the welcoming family-owned eatery specializing in comfort food for those needing comfort most. Want a more upscale dining experience? Try Gallagher’s Steakhouse (www.gallaghersfranchising.com), one of only the few Gallagher’s franchises nationwide.
For good basic info, www.sidestep.com has a good collection of guides to Newark and other airports, listing food, shopping and services.
Like all airports, Newark has plenty of fuel (Starbucks, Jake’s, Seattle’s Best) for the flight. Fill upyour tank. Wait, they’re calling you to the gate. It’s time to start the journey. But your adventurewas already underway. |
