We even have activity down the Shore, post-Labor Day: food, and crafts at a street fair Sunday in Red Bank to benefit the local fire department (www.redbankrivercenter.org/index.cfm) and the 9th Annual Beach Plum Festival Saturday at Island Beach State Park (www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/island.html or www.islandbeachnj.org).

And this looks pretty good: More than a dozen biodynamic farms in northwestern New Jersey open up on Saturday to visitors who want to enjoy the mountain scene and taste locally grown fruits and vegetables, artisanal cheeses, grass-fed beef, organic eggs and poultry, specialty honeys, healthy breads. For participating farms, check www.buyfreshnwj.org.

Now, don’t say there’s nothing to do this weekend!

Sounds of the City at NJPAC
We’ve gone up and down the state to find the best of the holiday weekend. There are more shore things… and plenty for the inland-lubbers.

Want fireworks, to light up your holiday?  Wildwood is shooting them off on the boardwalk Friday at 10 p.m. (www.wildwoodsnj.com). Further north, on Saturday, fireworks are in Manasquan — preceded by a 7 p.m. concert on the beach (www.manasquan-nj.com/events.html) sponsored by legendary Shore bar The Osprey (www.ospreynightclub.com).

Or watch the Oakley Pro Junior surfing contest, Friday and Saturday all day in Sea Isle City. Surfers under 21 are trying to  measure up for the World Qualifying Tour. For more info, surf your way to the website of Heritage Surf and Sport shop, www.heritagesurf.com.

In Atlantic City, end-of-season festivities begin tonight with the last of the free jazz concerts sponsored by the Chicken Bone Beach Historical Society (www.chickenbonebeach.org). It’s a block party atmosphere celebrating Atlantic City’s African American  heritage—Chicken Bone Beach, segregated until the 1950s, was a sort of Harlem-on-the-Shore. Entertainers like Sammy Davis Jr., and “Moms” Mabley were regulars at nightclubs in the neighborhood.

Up north, watch sleek Arabian horses practice the graceful art of dressage. In Sussex County, try “Autumn Adventure,” a schooling dressage show sponsored by the Arabian Horse Breeders Society of New Jersey.  It’s Sunday at the state fairgrounds in Augusta. www.newjerseystatefair.org/html/page.cfm/offseason

Check out the Great Falls Festival in Paterson, with games, rides, petting zoo, clowns, circus acts, artists’ impersonators, art shows, and a food court showcasing the diverse cultures that make up Paterson. Saturday through Monday, here’s their flier, www.patersononline.net/other/2007/2007_09_01_festival.pdf

And there’s free music at NJPAC (www.njpac.org) in Newark, outdoors at Theater Square. Tonight it’s Sounds of the City, with Vicki Genfan and Fertile Ground. Tomorrow there’s  a salsa dance party with Saborioco and Smiling David and the Pzazz Dance Company.

It’s your last chance to relax before your schedule shifts into fall gear.  Enjoy the show, wherever you go!

ImageSo you haven’t booked a room at the Shore for this weekend…and you are content to let the last blast of summer ’07 slip away without scrunching any more sand between your toes?

Think again. Here are five good reasons to re-set your compass due east.

How about an out-of-the way beach—close to Seaside Heights. What? Peace and quiet near Seaside?

Yep. Drive south past the boardwalk teeming with teenagers and into Island Beach State Park. Lots of greenery—it’s the Shore before development. But people know about it so most of its beaches are relatively crowded. Not ours, though.

Half a mile after you enter the gates, look for a maintenance yard on the left. Park in the small public lot across the road, walk toward the complex and look for an unmarked footpath. It takes you past some of the Shore’s most spectacular dunes, and ends on a beach that, say our sources, usually has only a couple other people.

Our to-do list this weekend also includes Spring Lake, the “Irish Riviera,” where the artist who celebrates Ireland, painter Philip Gray (www.philipgray.com), is visiting.  He will be signing some limited editions at the Irish Centre Sunday (www.irishcentre.net).

Shore shoppers are already buzzing about Jenna & Molly in Long Branch’s Pier Village (www.piervillage.com). Mom and daughter co-own this fun boutique with chic yet budget-conscious fashions that span both their age groups.

Need someplace to show off your new clothes?  If you click into www.jersey2night.com you can join the Shore’s biggest parties. This upstart website has an MTV-like crew cruising bars along the Shore, finding the hottest spots to float your boat.

Finally, join a celebration of the red, ripe, and juicy. The annual West Cape May Tomato Festival (www.capemay.com) on Saturday celebrates the finest Jersey fresh specimens from local farmers.

Weekend Picks: On the RocksThe last weekend before Labor Day.  Summer is almost over. But we still found plenty of stuff for you—North, South and of course down the Shore.

Red Bank takes to the sidewalks in the final “StreetLife” weekend of the season. Musicians will be performing throughout downtown while you get to play in the red hot shops. It’s Saturday, 7 to 10 p.m. (732) 842-4244 and www.redbankrivercenter.org.

Further south on the Parkway, in Tuckerton, check out the  Annual Boat Parade of Lights and Seafood Festival. Boaters dress up their vessels at the end of South Green Street and continue down Tuckerton Creek to the Seaport. Watch from the Seaport Boardwalks as you enjoy an evening seafood festival. Boats gather at 6 p.m. Saturday. www.tuckertonseaport.org

Way in deepest South Jersey it’s the 33d annual Market Street Day in the city of Salem. There will be music, arts and crafts vendors and food. Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. http://marketstreetday.com/

Still in South Jersey, in Mount Holly Friday night, High Street Grill (www.highstreetgrill.net) is doing a four-course dinner paired with craft beers from Stone Brewing Co. The emphasis is on fresh summer ingredients and a sense of southern California style. Dinner served at 7 p.m., $50. Reservations at (609) 265-9199.

Heading up north to Morris County, you can work off the dinner at the Triple Treat Strenuous Hike Saturday morning at 10, at Pyramid Mountain. Hikers will see the local “rock” stars, literally--the weird geological formations include Tripod Rock, a 160-ton boulder balanced atop three smaller rocks.

Rock on!  Have a great weekend!
