If you are mapping out a wine lover’s tour of New Jersey, here are two mandatory stops.

The first, Restaurant Latour, (www.crystalgolfresort.com) is so well hidden you may need a St. Bernard to find it. There are no signs for the place on Vernon’s Route 94. You’ll take a scary ride up a winding hill, through a construction zone. No lights at night. You need to ride a private elevator to the tiny restaurant on the second floor, inside the Crystal Springs Country Club.

But what makes the journey worthwhile are the two leather-bound wine lists that come with your menu. The world’s best bottlings are here, many in outstanding “vertical depth.” That means that, for instance, you’ll find 45 vintages of Chateau Latour (no relation), from 1880 to 2005.

Underneath the eatery, a huge wine cellar with more than 50,000 bottles. And construction is underway to make more space—one of the largest cellars in the world.

The food is pretty good too. Try the seven course wine tastings menu, ($150 pp) and you’ll enjoy the expert wine/food pairings.

Then, there’s the Wine Library, (www.winelibrary.com). It’s the pit stop next to the “Grease Monkey” on Morris Avenue in Springfield. And a world away from transmission fluid.

The two-story wine supermarket is stocked with a huge range of well chosen wine: the sublime, the standards, and newly discovered bargains. You’ll want to fill your cart to the brim with new and established labels.

Don’t pass up the appetizers — we love the honey goat cheese — and cold seafood salad in olive oil and garlic.

Library operations director Gary Vaynerchuk’s video blog is played on large screen TV and on the store’s web page. He’s the Crazy Eddie of vino; sipping, jawing, dispensing, bantering.

It is the New Jersey paradox, Latour and The Wine Library combine the sublime with the ordinary; the combination makes both places even more remarkable.
