Here’s one of those charitable events that is part fun, part fantasy, and certain to give you inspiration for your fixer-upper.

The Designer Show House of New Jersey opened this past weekend in Saddle River. Twenty interior and landscape designers took a brand new home and created every room as a work of art.

We visited the house on 19 Werimus Brook Rd. as the designers and their troops scrambled to put on finishing touches. Admission is $30 and proceeds go to Hackensack University Medical Center’s Cancer Wing.

Most striking in this sprawling new colonial is the upstairs floor plan that allows for a huge master bedroom and bath. The sunlit master bath, complete with a wall-length shower and separate standing tub, chandelier, makeup table alcove and sculpture,  is large enough to host a sports team post-game.

It’s a short hike to the children’s wing and guest bedrooms. Sneak a peak at the laundry room with colorful washcloths flying like flags above the high end Tromm washer and dryer.

We counted at least seven chandeliers, covering the breath and scope of style from traditional, to contemporary, to ultra-modern. Somehow, the lighting fixtures pulled each room and space together with style and grace.

Downstairs, the sunroom evokes a Christmas safari, with bright red walls and rugs, and splashes of green in the midst of a jungle theme.

What’s it like to live next door to one of these? The big house sits on a narrow road where one neighbor pointed out that traffic and parked cars have made the street incredibly congested, not to mention the construction vehicles that have backed up on her lawn.

You’ll be glad you are just visiting. The Show House is open seven days a week through November 4!
