It’s not too late to order a batch of Sonya Newton’s Red Velvet Cupcakes for your Valentine.
Sonya, who lives in Maplewood, turned her love of baking deserts into a business, using her website www.lovemycakeboutique.com to sell and market home baked goodies.
She stirs and mixes all day in her kitchen, and if you live close enough she’ll even messenger over her specialties, like the cupcakes or the Dulce de Leche Ethan Cheesecake, named after her two-year-old son.
The cakes get plenty of buzz; she bakes for local charity events and even helped launch the opening of makeup empress Bobbie Brown’s Montclair shop.
The menu also lists different a cherry torte and different chocolate cakes like German chocolate, banana chocolate chip and chocolate mousse. The sampling she sent us proved her baking was not for the calorie counters in our midst.
Sonya’s cakes are dense and dreamy. She does not spare the sugar or butter. The cream cheese frosting on our Red Velvets was perfectly balanced. You will not even come close to anything like this in the supermarket!
Sonya graduated from the Culinary Institute of New York and launched her business eight years ago next month. Someday soon, she hopes to move out of her house, and open a bakery, perhaps in Montclair. We have the feeling she’ll get there sooner rather than later. Sweet dreams!
