Until recently, we were satisfied with our traditional cupcake. A light cake capped with a sugary hat of frosting. Decorated with nothing, or some sprinkles. Happily devoured in several quick bites.

At Johnny Cupcakes in Clifton (www.myjohnnycupcakes.com), a cupcake is a commitment beyond plain vanilla and basic chocolate. There is a Fruity Pebbles, the Peanut Butterful Chocolate, and Raspberry Cheesecake. Mouthwatering all, but still, they look like cupcakes.

Then there’s Johnny’s most unusual cupcake. The Burger and Fries cupcake that looks remarkably like — well, burger and fries.

The burger cupcake has become a mini-tourist attraction. Folks stop by to buy a cup cake and ogle it at the counter. The bun and burger are made from three cupcake tops, the lettuce and catsup from frosting.

Another Jersey cupcake star is Sweet Avenue Bake Shop in Rutherford, where a neat website trick (www.sweetavenuebakeshop.com) lets you pass the mouse over each brightly photographed cupcake to get its name and resume.

The S’more cupcake, the Root Beer Float, and the Pink Snowball all look fabulous. But no burgers on the menu here.

At the Pink Cake Box (www.pinkcakebox.com) in Denville one bride ordered a five-tier stand with 70 cupcakes in place of the traditional wedding cake. They also have a colorful rack of billiards cupcakes for the groom.

The website www.cupcakefetish.com should help you find an equally satisfying cupcakery close to home.

Back at Johnny’s in Clifton, we’re taking a big bite into our burger (cupcake). Well done!
