Our food editor Rosalie Saferstein reports on some Irish restaurants where you don’t have to wait for St Patrick’s Day to feast on Irish cuisine.

THE AULD SHEBEEN, Whippany (www.theauldshebeen.com) Try shepherd’s pie or 7-hour leg of lamb at this genuine Irish pub that was built in Ireland and reassembled inside the Hanover Marriott. Check out the whisky still from an 18th century shebeen, an illegal drinking establishment.

ST. JAMES’S GATE PUBLICK HOUSE, Maplewood (www.stjamesgatepub.com) The jukebox has Irish songs and there’s live traditional Irish music Sundays 2 to 5 p.m. The bar has a full draught list and an extensive selection of Irish whiskeys and Scottish single malts. Try the Irish breakfast: scrambled eggs, roasted tomato, rashers, bangers, chips, and Irish brown bread served daily from 11:30 to 2 a.m. A second location, St. Stephen’s Green Publick House, is located in Spring Lakes Heights aka “the Irish Riviera.”

THE SHANNON ROSE, Clifton (www.TheShannonRose.com) The Shannon Rose offers filling fare such as Irish corned beef spring rolls, corned beef sliders, Gaelic chicken with an Irish whiskey sauce, Guinness beef stew, and Irish cream bash pie.

THATCHER MCGHEE’S IRISH PUB AND EATERY, Pompton Lakes (973-839-3377) You might encounter traditional Irish step dancing at this pub with a real thatched roof. Have a look at the hand-painted Irish cottages decorating the walls.

TUN TAVERN, Atlantic City  (www.tuntavern.com) A restaurant and brewery that serves handcrafted beers in various sizes including a growler (half-gallon jug). Try the Irish Red or the Coffee and Cream Stout.

TRINITY IRISH PUB & CARVERY, Atlantic City (www.trinitypubac.com) Feast on Irish smoked salmon, fish and chips, or bangers and mash.
