It’s a good Father’s Day weekend for dads who love ships and boats.
Those who also love golf can it have it all aboard the Battleship New Jersey. Go hit golf balls off the deck of the retired U.S. Navy warship, now a floating museum on the Delaware in Camden, on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pros from the Philadelphia Section PGA will evaluate Dad’s swing. Prizes include greens fees at area courses.
Another retired and re-activated ship is the A.J. Meerwald, a 1928 schooner that once worked the oyster beds of Delaware Bay and is now a floating classroom and New Jersey’s official Tall Ship. The Meerwald is at the center of the Delaware Bay Days festival, Saturday in the historic South Jersey fishing villages of Bivalve, Port Norris and Shellpile. There will be artisans and crafters, live music, fireworks and tours of the marshes along the Maurice River aboard the historic vessel.
Up north there’s another river marsh festival on Saturday — MeadowFest, along the Meadowlands of the Hackensack River. Games and rides for the kids, ecological tours of Snake Hill and pontoon boat cruises on the Hackensack for all. Also look for the mPower Pavilion, which will have displays and interactive demonstrations on green buildings, renewable energy, and alternative fuels.
Off the boat, bring Dad to the wine. Alba Vineyard in Milford is having a Father’s Day Celebration Sunday starting at noon. The kids can keep busy with face painting, sand art, moon bounce, and pony rides while Dad enjoys the wine tasting and cellar tours. Then the whole family can go on a hot air balloon ride or take a ride in the horse drawn carriage.
Elsewhere, the kids can craft Dad a hand-made memory at Father’s Day arts events. There’s one at the Garden State Discovery Museum in Cherry Hill, and at the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts in Madison.
More hand-made crafts at the exhibit of 500 quilts and quilt wearables at the annual convention of the Quilt Guild of New Jersey, running today through Saturday at the Convention and Exposition Center in Edison.
Plenty of ways to celebrate Dad --- and enjoy a great weekend!
