food: healthy bites
April 21, 2009

There’s plenty for En Jay foodies to chew on this week!

It’s Earth Day, so we’re thinking organic, green, and goodness. You’ll want to check out Zen Soy products, (www.zensoy.com) sold and marketed from their office in South Hackensack.

We tried a sampler of soy puddings and milk and found that this healthy alternative need not be flat tasting or boring. The new On The Go line of drinks, in containers designed for you lunch box, come in chocolate, vanilla and cappuccino.

The Schwartz family, which owns Zen Soy, began as dairy farmers in Queens. They are the founders of the Elmhurst Dairy brand, and one of the largest distributors of dairy and soy products in the area.

For more organic from the farm—Stop by Tea Together (www.teatogether.com) in Millburn. They import a select line of handmade organic jams and marmalades from a farm in St. Remy au Bois, in the north of France.

The products are so good they are sold to luxury hotels and restaurants. If you are lucky, they’ll put out an assortment with some crackers and you’ll taste your way through. The gift boxes make a great, thoughtful present for the jam fans in your life.

Finally, the franchise Veggie Heaven (www.veggieheavennj.com) recently opened a new restaurant in Denville. The mock meat specialists draw raves from vegetarians who want the texture and taste of meat, chicken, and fish, but none of the real thing.

The food is made with soy protein, wheat gluten and mushrooms. The menu is Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese style dishes. The shapes and flavors are so satisfying, you’ll munch and crunch your way through, half-believing these are not imitations.

Healthy choices all, for this Earth Day 2009. We’re eating green, and liking it more and more.
